Celebrating the Life of Richard Chen

It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we share the news of the passing of Richard Chen, a beloved and cherished member of the California High School Speech Association community. Richard wasn’t just a participant in our world of speech and debate – he was a pillar of strength and warmth, always ready to lend a hand and uplift those around him.

His passion for empowering students through speech and debate was evident in everything he did, from his dedicated work judging rounds to the countless hours he spent supporting tournament directors and staff. For years, Richard lovingly ran the Congress division at the Santa Clara University Invitational, but regardless of the tournament, you could always find Richard providing a comforting home base where students could focus, thrive, and feel truly supported.

Richard’s kindness, generosity, and unwavering commitment to our community will forever be remembered. He touched so many lives with his warm smile and gentle presence, always making others feel valued and cared for. Our hearts go out to his family, and to all who had the privilege of knowing and working alongside him.

We will miss him deeply, but his legacy will live on in the countless students and colleagues whose lives he impacted.
