Angelique Ronald to be Recognized with CHSSA Service Above Self Award at the 2025 State Championship

Culver City, CA, April 14, 2025 — The California High School Speech Association (CHSSA) is proud to announce that Angelique Ronald will be recognized as the recipient of the 2025 CHSSA Donovan Cummings Service Above Self Award at the 2025 State Championship Tournament, taking place May 2-4 at Culver City High School.

For the past 8 years, Ronald has devoted herself wholly to CHSSA as its Vice President of Activities—preparing and directing seven State Championship Tournaments, supporting officers and committees across all corners of CHSSA, and working tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure that California’s speech and debate community runs with professionalism, equity, and care. There’s virtually nothing in the organization that she hasn’t had a hand in helping to make happen. Whether it’s answering hundreds of late-night texts or emails, supporting coaches and students, or solving problems no one else even sees, she does it all with grace and compassion.

“Angelique doesn’t do the work for recognition—she does it because it matters,” said CHSSA President Mikendra McCoy. “She gives more than anyone ever sees or knows. She holds herself to the highest standards, not for glory, but because she believes our students deserve nothing less.”

Her service has also extended far beyond CHSSA. Ronald is a nationally respected leader in equity and inclusion efforts in speech and debate. She has served as the equity officer at major national tournaments, including the Tournament of Champions, and founded the National Speech and Debate Association’s Ballot Review Committee, ensuring student feedback is respectful and free of bias before it ever reaches them.

“Whether they know it or not, every student, coach, judge, and board member in this organization has been impacted by Angelique’s work,” McCoy added. “She has made all of our lives easier—and CHSSA immeasurably better.”

Ronald will be formally honored with the Donovan Cummings Service Above Self Award at the 2025 State Championship Awards Ceremony in Culver City.
